Israeli celebrity chef Eyal Shani is taking his everything-in-a-pita chain Miznon to Austria, the chef’s business group confirmed Wednesday. This will be Miznon’s fifth branch. The chain is expanding into Vienna, the new hot destination among Israelis.
Miznon initially opened on Tel Aviv’s Ibn Gvirol Street in 2011. At the time, it was was considered an unconventional idea - gourmet pita sandwiches at not-so-cheap prices with fillings that went beyond the standard street food fare.
Shani later opened two more branches in Tel Aviv, and then launched a kosher branch in Paris two years ago. The French branch was very successful, drawing a clientele that went beyond Israelis.
Unconventional dishes at Miznon include Shani’s signature roasted cauliflower in a pita, as well as chewing gum-flavored ice cream served in a pita for dessert.
Neta Bar, the group’s restaurant manager, said that renovations on the Vienna restaurant had begun a few days ago. It is scheduled to open in two months, and it will not be kosher.
The Vienna branch will have the same atmosphere and design as the other branches, and many of the dishes will be similar to those served in Israel, with the addition of a few local specialties, she noted. The French branch offers boeuf bourguignon in a pita, for instance, and the Austrian location is also likely to offer specialties in a similar spirit, she said.
Beyond his nine restaurants, including the new Vienna location, Shani is known in Israel for his antics as a judge on the local Master Chef reality show.
