Fortune Magazine: Clinton Trumped Donny T and won the debate by a margin of 77% to 20 % with 3% calling it a draw.

We ranked the candidates’ performances in Monday’s contest.

Hillary Clinton won by 77 to 20 with 3% undecided. In the first and potentially most consequential presidential debate of 2016, the Democratic nominee presented as composed and commanding, ticking through her policy prescriptions while landing a series of devastating blows on Donald Trump’s record and readiness. A fidgety Trump meanwhile tried repeatedly to ruffle her with interruptions while riffing his way through his own answers, but struggled on both counts.

Trump arguably had his best moments in the opening section of the debate, which tends to be its most-watched portion. Drawing from his stump speech, he conjured an image of a blighted U.S., outsmarted by its trading partners and abused by its own companies. He promised, with his trademark bluster and imprecision, to get tough on those responsible at home and abroad. “We have to stop our jobs from leaving,” he said, dismissing Clinton as a member of the entrenched political class that’s presided over an economic hollowing-out.

Yet Clinton moved from the start to stick Trump in his softest spot: his business dealings. In her second answer, she explained their differing approaches to the economy as the product of their “different perspectives.” While she was raised in a middle-class family, she said, Trump started out in the real-estate business with $14 million in loans from father. Trump maintains he only received a small fraction of that amount, a key to his narrative about being self-made.

Trump took the bait, the first of several times that he allowed Clinton to provoke him with scripted digs that kept him on the defensive. She weaved into an answer about economic progress under President Obama, for example, a mention that Trump cheered the housing collapse at the time as an opportunity to turn a profit. And Trump chimed in: “That’s called business, by the way.” He deployed another self-defeating interruption as Clinton listed reasons Trump might be avoiding releasing his tax returns. “Maybe he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes,” Clinton said. Trump, apparently confirming the charge, blurted, “That makes me smart.”

It got worse for Trump as the night wore on. After Clinton reeled off a summary of her plans for criminal justice reform, Trump offered his own version, which boiled down to reviving the stop-and-frisk approach pioneered and since abandoned by the New York City Police Department. Promising to restore law and order, Trump once again painted a dystopic vision of American inner cities as war zones, noting he’s seen them in person on recent visits while Clinton “decided to stay home.” Clinton interjected, “I think Donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. And, yes, I did. And you know what else I prepared for? I prepared to be president. And I think that’s a good thing,” prompting a round of applause from the crowd, which had been instructed to stay silent.

Later in the debate, the Republican nominee asserted that he’s “developed very, very good relationships over the last little while with the African-American community.” Polling doesn’t support the claim, with national surveys showing Trump’s support among black voters hovering in the low single digits. But the Clinton campaign likewise has concerns with the demographic — that their middling enthusiasm with her candidacy with lead to low turnout, which could tip the balance in key swing states like Florida and North Carolina. Clinton helped her cause on that front in the debate, in part thanks to Trump injuring his own.

Asked about his years-long push for the lie that President Obama was born abroad — a campaign viewed by African-Americans as a racist attempt to discredit the first black president — Trump offered no apologies. Instead, he once again tried to blame Clinton’s 2008 primary campaign for originating the myth and claimed credit for settling it by finally annoying Obama into releasing his long-form birth certificate in 2011. And when pressed by NBC moderator Lester Holt on what he’d say to black voters about his birther advocacy, Trump replied, “I say nothing. I say nothing, because I was able to get him to produce it. He should have produced it a long time before. I say nothing.”

Trump didn’t fare much better when the topic turned to women, with whom Clinton also enjoys a disproportionate advantage. Asked to explain what he meant when he remarked recently that Clinton doesn’t have a “presidential look,” Trump insisted he was referring to her stamina, which he called lacking. It’s a familiar critique from Trump, who first used it to greater effect against former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in the primaries. Ironically, Trump attempted it Monday toward the end of the debate, as he himself appeared increasingly gassed. Clinton quickly turned it back around on him, using it to land a final — and brutal — scripted attack: “You know, he tried to switch from looks to stamina. But this is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs,” she said. “And one of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest. He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them. And he called this woman Miss Piggy. Then he called her Miss Housekeeping, because she was Latina. Donald, she has a name. Her name is Alicia Machado. And she just became a U.S. citizen, and you can bet she is going to vote this November.”

Trump didn’t have a ready reply, mentioning that he’d directed some of his rougher comments about women toward Rosie O’Donnell, “and I think everybody would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her.” Then, the candidate who’s styled himself as the consummate tough guy gave himself credit for holding back on something “extremely rough to Hillary” that he could have said but decided against. And he complained that Clinton has “spent hundreds of millions of dollars on negative ads on me, many of which are absolutely untrue. They’re untrue. And they’re misrepresentations. And I will tell you this, Lester: It’s not nice. And I don’t deserve that.”

It was as if after getting manhandled for the better part of 90 minutes before a nine-figure audience, Trump was asking for a reprieve. He didn't get  . He lost by 57 percenage points . Hillary Clinton ran the table and then walked off with it.

Oy Vey God Save America from Donny T Yes, All of Donald Trump Supporters Are Deplorable and Irredeemable

Yes,  All of  Donald Trump Supporters Are Deplorable and Irredeemable
Photo: Andrew Renneisen/Getty Images

Following the classic definition of a gaffe as a politician telling the truth, Hillary Clinton’s comment about Donald Trump’s supporters (“just to be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables.’ Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it”) was the purest and most classic example. The national media has spent a year and a quarter documenting in exquisite, redundant detail the rabid, anti-intellectual nationalistic bigotry of Trump’s hard-core fanbase. But it has taken Hillary Clinton’s affirmation to transform this by-now-banal observation into a scandal.

Back in February, Wall Street Journal editorial columnist Bret Stephensmourned that it had once been a slander that “Republicans were all closet bigots,” but “Not anymore. The candidacy of Donald Trump is the open sewer of American conservatism.” Stephens proceeded to argue that Trump’s carefully hedged disavowal of David Duke failed to dent his support — “If anything it has enhanced it.” Now that Clinton has made the similar point in milder terms, absolving a larger proportion of Trump’s supporters than Stephens did, and choosing the gentler metaphor of a basket rather than a sewer, The Wall Street Journal editorial page is scandalized that Clinton was caught “attributing hateful motives to tens of millions of Americans.” Americans! Hateful! In large numbers! How dare she!

To the extent that Clinton’s comment had any novel quality, it was her loose calculation that the bigoted make up half of Trump’s support. Clinton has dutifully apologized (“I regret saying half”). And, depending on how one calculates it, this could be high. Committed white nationalists comprise a small minority of the Trump vote. On the other hand, it could also be low.

The overwhelming majority of Trump aficionados support his proposed ban on Muslim immigrants — a policy many Republican elected officials opposed as an unconstitutional religious test — while two-thirds of them register unfavorable views of American Muslims. A plurality of Republicans supported Trump’s claim that a Mexican-American judge was inherently biased and therefore unfit to preside over his fraud trial. (In the same poll, a huge majority of Republicans deemed Trump’s comments not racist, despite Paul Ryan’s admission that it constituted a textbook example of racism.) Two-thirds of voters who like Trump consider President Obama a Muslim, and three-fifths of them believe he was not born in the United States.

There is a lively debate as to just what these poll findings tell us. Do Trump’s supporters legitimately share all of his deranged beliefs, or are they merely signaling some kind of tribal affinity? It is a bit of a distinction without a difference. Trump’s supporters are first and foremostauthoritarians. They are authoritarians in the sense, identified by Stephens and many others, that they yearn for a strongman who can override the systemic constraints on presidential power. They are also authoritarians in the sense of having authoritarian personalities. Political scientists havefound that Trump has capitalized on the trend toward authoritarianism in the Republican electorate, which works in concert with the growing levels ofwhite racial resentment in the Republican electorate.

The combination of these sociological trends has placed Trump in his current role as tribal leader of Red America. In this role, Trump is free of any intellectual accountability so long as he stays loyal to the elemental identity markers of his tribe. He can lie blatantly, reverse himself back and forth repeatedly, or stammer incoherently without consequence because his supporters have placed complete faith in him as an authentic representative of the volk.

Clinton controversially described half of Trump’s supporters as “irredeemable.” Trump earlier this year framed the same idea in a more colorful and perhaps more damning way: “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.” Both statements reflect the same underlying truth: Trump enjoys a hard-core support that lies beyond persuasion, utterly immune to even the starkest factual evidence. Clinton committed a gaffe because she acknowledged a reality that literally every other person in America, including Donald Trump himself, is permitted to speak aloud.

God Save America From Donny T .... Baiting The Trump into playing the fool and giving #ImWithHer Hilary Clinton yet another boost

God Save America From Donny T .... Baiting The Trump into playing the fool and giving #ImWithHer Hilary Clinton yet another boost

Trump and the Khans

He acted like a jerk, but there’s more to the story.

0:00 / 0:00

Best of the Web Columnist James Taranto on how Democrats are capitalizing on Donald Trump’s war of words with a Gold Star family. Photo credit: Getty Images.
“Yes, I think the Republican nominee is unfit to serve as president,” the Hill quotes Barack Obama as saying today. “I said so last week, and he keeps on proving it.” The president also asked top Republicans rhetorically: “Why are you still endorsing him?”
Obama’s confrontational electioneering, unusual for a president not seeking re-election, is part of the fallout from last week’s Democratic National Convention speech by Khizr Khan, a Muslim Pakistani-American whose Emirati-born son, Humayun Khan, a captain in the U.S. Army, was killed in combat in Iraq 12 years ago. Peggy Noonannoted the Khan speech in her column, filed late Thursday night:
The [convention’s] most electric line did not come from a politician. . . . Mr. Khan said to Mr. Trump, who did not serve in the military: “You have sacrificed nothing.” The crowd roared to its feet at those four damning words.
The Trump campaign responded as follows:
Donald Trump and I believe that Captain Humayun Khan is an American hero and his family, like all Gold Star families, should be cherished by every American.
Captain Khan gave his life to defend our country in the global war on terror. Due to the disastrous decisions of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, a once stable Middle East has now been overrun by ISIS. This must not stand.
By suspending immigration from countries that have been compromised by terrorism, rebuilding our military, defeating ISIS at its source and projecting strength on the global stage, we will reduce the likelihood that other American families will face the enduring heartbreak of the Khan family.
Donald Trump will support our military and their families and we will defeat the enemies of our freedom.
Unfortunately for Trump, that response—in the form of a “Statement From Republican Vice Presidential Candidate, Governor Mike Pence”—did not come until Sunday evening, after Trump had spent three days acting like a stupid jerk. Politico’s Zachary Karabell:
Trump, as is his wont whenever he is criticized, fired back at the Khans. In an interview, he oddly questioned why Ghazala Khan [Khizr Khan’s wife] said nothing during the speech and implied that she may have not have been allowed to speak by her husband—a double hit on Muslims and women that only made Trump look worse when the mother later explained she simply couldn’t speak of her son Humayun without breaking down.
Then Trump dug his own hole deeper. Asked by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos what sacrifices he, Trump, has made for his country, the GOP candidate appeared to compare Humayun Khan’s supreme sacrifice to . . . job creation. “I think I’ve made a lot of sacrifices. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs,” Trump said. With some incredulity, Stephanopoulos responded: “Those are sacrifices?” Trump casually answered: “Oh sure, I think they’re sacrifices. I think when I can employ thousands and thousands of people, take care of their education, take care of so many things. Even in military, I mean I was very responsible, along with a group of people, for getting the Vietnam memorial in downtown Manhattan, which to this day people thank me for.”
Khan’s speech not only successfully baited Trump into playing the fool; it gave Nevertrumps an opportunity to feel good about themselves. We noticed this Sunday tweet from Max Boot of the Council on Foreign Relations: “Either you stand with Khizr & Ghazala Khan or Donald Trump. No middle ground. Choose your side. I’m with #KhizrKhan.” But neither Khan is running for president. The actual choice is between Mrs. Clinton and Trump, but by equivocating in this way, Boot transfers his support for Mrs. Clinton to a sympathetic figure.
As for “no middle ground,” that isn’t even true in the election, as one does have the option of abstaining or voting third-party. It certainly isn’t true of the Trump-Khan dustup. We think Trump has handled it appallingly, but we also find plenty of fault with the Democrat-media narrative that has arisen around it.
Take Khan’s j’accuse, “You have sacrificed nothing,” and Stephanopoulos’s question, “What sacrifice have you made for your country?” Do these not apply equally well to Mrs. Clinton? She didn’t serve in the military, nor did her husband (a fact Republicans hoped vainly would work against him in 1992), and their daughter has lived quite a pampered life. As David French—an Army Reserve major, Iraq veteran and Nevertrump stalwart—observes:
Hillary Clinton hasn’t sacrificed—she’s lived the progressive dream. And she’s certainly not a “public servant”—she’s a cynical, grasping, and ambitious politician. Her accomplishments are meager, and her one guiding star is her own self-advancement.
A Daily Beast column Saturday carried the headline “Chicken Hawk Trump Mocks Captain Khan’s Mother.” We’ve heard that epithet before, but isn’t hawkishness a necessary element? Trump is running as the less hawkish candidate, faulting Mrs. Clinton for voting in favor of the Iraq war and pushing for the 2011 Libya intervention.
During his DNC speech, Khan cited Trump’s proposal for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration (on which he seems to have equivocated of late, as in the Pence statement above) and answered as follows:
Let me ask you: have you even read the United States Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy. In this document, look for the words “liberty” and “equal protection of law.”
But as the Washington Examiner’s Byron York and National Review’sAndy McCarthy point out—and as we explained back in December, when Trump first put the idea forward—the Constitution places almost no limit on Congress’s power to regulate immigration, and none at all on its power to control entry of unadmitted nonresident aliens. The legal term of art is the plenary power doctrine.
As NR’s Jim Geraghty points out, the media are highly selective in their treatment of grieving parents:
Hey, remember when the first night of the Republican convention featured Patricia Smith, mother of Sean Smith, one of the Americans slain in Benghazi? Remember how her speech was called a “cynical exploitation of grief”? Or the “unabashed exploitation of private people’s grief” or “theweaponization of grief”? Remember how she “ruined the evening”? How it was, “a spectacle so offensive, it was hard to even comprehend”? How some liberal commentators said, “Mrs. Smith was really most interested in drinking blood rather than healing”? How her speech represented an “early dip into the gutter”? Remember how a GQ writer publicly expressed a desire to beat her to death?
As is often the case, Trump’s outrageous behavior finds a precedent in his critics’ behavior—in this case, their behavior just the week before.
