Drama at the Olympics in Rio before the Games even opened...
Members of the Lebanese team refused to ride on the same bus as the Israeli team on Friday.
According to Udi Gal, the Israeli sailing team trainer, the Lebanese team demanded the driver close the door when they realised the Israeli team was trying to get on. In the meantime, organisers tried to scatter the Israeli team across other buses, but due to security concerns they wanted to remain altogether. Udi insisted they stayed on their designated bus and that if the Lebanese did not want to travel with them, then they should be the ones to get off the bus.
When the driver opened the door again, the head of the Lebanese delegation blocked the entrance with his body.
Wanting to avoid an international and physical incident organisers quickly organised special transport for the Israelis.
It is such a shame that something like this has happened at an event that is intended to unite the entire world through a language everyone understands - sport.
As a side note, who thought it would be a good idea to put the Lebanese and the Israeli teams on the same bus in the first place?
This Olympics, Israel has sent its largest delegation ever with 47 athletes competing in 17 sports 🇮🇱🏅
